From a Problem to an Innovative Solution

The Problem

Taiwanese high school students face one of the most severe sleep deprivation crises, with over 90% not meeting the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night. Students juggle late-night cram schools, hours of homework, and high academic pressures, creating a culture of chronic exhaustion. This wasn’t just a personal struggle—it was a community issue that needed attention.

The NOVA Competition:

During an entrepreneurship competition, I set out to address the growing problem of student sleep deprivation. With my team, we designed an innovative eyemask concept featuring silicone insulation to soothe under-eye puffiness and a zipper compartment for temperature control. This idea won first place, which motivated me to take the project beyond the competition.

From Concept to Reality: The Dream Silk Journey

The Challenges:

Making the leap from idea to product was anything but easy. I contacted numerous manufacturers but was met with silence or rejections. When I pitched the concept to pharmacy managers, my credibility as a high schooler was often questioned. Through persistence, refinement of my pitch, and support from friends and teachers, I finally secured a partnership with a manufacturer.

The Outcome:

Dream Silk Eye Masks transitioned from an ambitious concept to a practical product. While we couldn’t implement all the original design features, we created a lightweight, comfortable eyemask that has sparked conversations about sleep and mental health. To date, we’ve sold 200 masks and secured pre-orders from 8 stores, with plans to grow even further.
